Update: UOB-Kay Hian Holdings (SGX:U10) Stock Gained 26% In The Last Year
Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. To wit, the UOB-Kay Hian Holdings Limited (SGX:U10) share price is 26% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market decline of around 11% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! However, the stock hasn't done so well in the longer term, with the stock only up 8.6% in three years.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the last year UOB-Kay Hian Holdings grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 97%. It's fair to say that the share price gain of 26% did not keep pace with the EPS growth. Therefore, it seems the market isn't as excited about UOB-Kay Hian Holdings as it was before. This could be an opportunity. The caution is also evident in the lowish P/E ratio of 10.68.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on UOB-Kay Hian Holdings' earnings, revenue and cash flow.
What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of UOB-Kay Hian Holdings, it has a TSR of 30% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that UOB-Kay Hian Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 30% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 6% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand UOB-Kay Hian Holdings better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that UOB-Kay Hian Holdings is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 2 of those are a bit unpleasant...
