VICOM Ltd (SGX:WJP) has announced it will be reducing its dividend payable on the 25th of May to S$0.052. However, the dividend yield of 3.9% is still a decent boost to shareholder returns.

VICOM Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Prior to this announcement, VICOM's dividend was making up a very large proportion of earnings and perhaps more concerning was that it was 122% of cash flows. This is certainly a risk factor, as reduced cash flows could force the company to pay a lower dividend.
Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 8.4% over the next year. If the dividend continues on its recent course, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 126%, which is a bit high and could start applying pressure to the balance sheet.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least 1 cut in the last 10 years. Since 2012, the dividend has gone from S$0.035 to S$0.065. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 6.5% over that duration. We have seen cuts in the past, so while the growth looks promising we would be a little bit cautious about its track record.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. It's not great to see that VICOM's earnings per share has fallen at approximately 2.5% per year over the past five years. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this can turn into a longer term trend.
VICOM's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. The track record isn't great, and the payments are a bit high to be considered sustainable. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
