There wouldn't be many who think Unibap AB (publ)'s (STO:UNIBAP) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the Electronic industry in Sweden is similar at about 1.5x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Unibap Has Been Performing

With revenue growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Unibap has been doing very well. The P/S is probably moderate because investors think this strong revenue growth might not be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. Those who are bullish on Unibap will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

How Is Unibap's Revenue Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Unibap's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 153% gain to the company's top line. Spectacularly, three year revenue growth has ballooned by several orders of magnitude, thanks in part to the last 12 months of revenue growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 6.9% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we find it interesting that Unibap is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What Does Unibap's P/S Mean For Investors?

While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

To our surprise, Unibap revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't contributing to its P/S as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. It'd be fair to assume that potential risks the company faces could be the contributing factor to the lower than expected P/S. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with Unibap (at least 2 which shouldn't be ignored), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
