Despite an already strong run, TagMaster AB (publ) (STO:TAGM B) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. But not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 20% in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, given close to half the companies in Sweden have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 18x, you may still consider TagMaster as an attractive investment with its 9.6x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

TagMaster certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as TagMaster's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 313% last year. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the one analyst covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 52% over the next year. With the market predicted to deliver 13% growth , that's a disappointing outcome.

In light of this, it's understandable that TagMaster's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

The Final Word

Despite TagMaster's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that TagMaster maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
