Firefly (STO:FIRE) Looks To Prolong Its Impressive Returns
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So, when we ran our eye over Firefly's (STO:FIRE) trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Firefly:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.34 = kr58m ÷ (kr288m - kr115m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).
Therefore, Firefly has an ROCE of 34%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Electronic industry average of 17%.

So How Is Firefly's ROCE Trending?
In terms of Firefly's history of ROCE, it's quite impressive. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 34% and the business has deployed 130% more capital into its operations. Returns like this are the envy of most businesses and given it has repeatedly reinvested at these rates, that's even better. If these trends can continue, it wouldn't surprise us if the company became a multi-bagger.
What We Can Learn From Firefly's ROCE
In short, we'd argue Firefly has the makings of a multi-bagger since its been able to compound its capital at very profitable rates of return. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 342% return they've received over the last five years. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
