Vertiseit AB (publ) (STO:VERT B) Stocks Shoot Up 28% But Its P/E Still Looks Reasonable

The Vertiseit AB (publ) (STO:VERT B) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 28%. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 5.2% in the last twelve months.

Since its price has surged higher, Vertiseit's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 54.9x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Sweden, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 20x and even P/E's below 13x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Vertiseit has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Vertiseit's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 28% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 56% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the one analyst covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 65% per annum over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 19% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Vertiseit's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Final Word

Vertiseit's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that Vertiseit maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.

There are also other vital risk factors to consider and we've discovered 3 warning signs for Vertiseit (1 is significant!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
