I Built A List Of Growing Companies And Prevas (STO:PREV B) Made The Cut

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Prevas (STO:PREV B). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is Prevas Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Over the last three years, Prevas has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. It's good to see that Prevas's EPS have grown from kr4.07 to kr4.79 over twelve months. I doubt many would complain about that 18% gain.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). While we note Prevas's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 6.0% to kr856m. That's progress.

Since Prevas is no giant, with a market capitalization of kr1.0b, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are Prevas Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like standing at the lookout, surveying the horizon at sunrise, insider buying, for some investors, sparks joy. Because oftentimes, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

One positive for Prevas, is that company insiders paid kr370k for shares in the last year. While this isn't much, we also note an absence of sales.

And the insider buying isn't the only sign of alignment between shareholders and the board, since Prevas insiders own more than a third of the company. In fact, they own 44% of the shares, making insiders a very influential shareholder group. I'm reassured by this kind of alignment, as it suggests the business will be run for the benefit of shareholders. In terms of absolute value, insiders have kr442m invested in the business, using the current share price. That's nothing to sneeze at!

Is Prevas Worth Keeping An Eye On?

As I already mentioned, Prevas is a growing business, which is what I like to see. Better yet, insiders are significant shareholders, and have been buying more shares. To me, that all makes it well worth a spot on your watchlist, as well as continuing research. It is worth noting though that we have found 3 warning signs for Prevas that you need to take into consideration.

There are plenty of other companies that have insiders buying up shares. So if you like the sound of Prevas, you'll probably love this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying.
