There's no doubt that investing in the stock market is a truly brilliant way to build wealth. But if when you choose to buy stocks, some of them will be below average performers. Over the last year the CAG Group AB (publ) (STO:CAG) share price is up 60%, but that's less than the broader market return. Note that businesses generally develop over the long term, so the returns over the last year might not reflect a long term trend.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

CAG Group was able to grow EPS by 1.3% in the last twelve months. The share price gain of 60% certainly outpaced the EPS growth. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for CAG Group the TSR over the last year was 69%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

With a TSR of 69% over the last year, CAG Group shareholders would be reasonably content, given that's not far from the broader market return of 71%. However, the share price has actually dropped 0.3% over the last three months. This could simply be a short term fluctuation, though. Even the biggest winners have their down periods. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
