There's Reason For Concern Over Advenica AB (publ)'s (STO:ADVE) Massive 30% Price Jump
Those holding Advenica AB (publ) (STO:ADVE) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 30% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 24% is also fairly reasonable.
Following the firm bounce in price, when almost half of the companies in Sweden's Software industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.3x, you may consider Advenica as a stock not worth researching with its 4.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Advenica's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Advenica's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn the corner. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Advenica's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 5.3%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 96% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 16% during the coming year according to the lone analyst following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 17%, which is not materially different.
In light of this, it's curious that Advenica's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Advenica's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Seeing as its revenues are forecast to grow in line with the wider industry, it would appear that Advenica currently trades on a higher than expected P/S. When we see revenue growth that just matches the industry, we don't expect elevates P/S figures to remain inflated for the long-term. Unless the company can jump ahead of the rest of the industry in the short-term, it'll be a challenge to maintain the share price at current levels.
