We Think Wihlborgs Fastigheter (STO:WIHL) Is Taking Some Risk With Its Debt

So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. What Risk Does Debt Bring?

How Healthy Is Wihlborgs Fastigheter's Balance Sheet?

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Wihlborgs Fastigheter had liabilities of kr2.06b due within 12 months and liabilities of kr33.2b due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of kr185.0m and kr332.0m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities total kr34.7b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

Given this deficit is actually higher than the company's market capitalization of kr23.8b, we think shareholders really should watch Wihlborgs Fastigheter's debt levels, like a parent watching their child ride a bike for the first time. Hypothetically, extremely heavy dilution would be required if the company were forced to pay down its liabilities by raising capital at the current share price.

Once we consider all the factors above, together, it seems to us that Wihlborgs Fastigheter's debt is making it a bit risky. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but we'd generally feel more comfortable with less leverage. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt.
