There's No Escaping Swedish Logistic Property AB's (STO:SLP B) Muted Earnings

With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 15.8x Swedish Logistic Property AB (STO:SLP B) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in Sweden have P/E ratios greater than 23x and even P/E's higher than 42x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Swedish Logistic Property has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Swedish Logistic Property's Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Swedish Logistic Property's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 88% gain to the company's bottom line. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 43% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 3.3% per year as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 19% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Swedish Logistic Property's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Swedish Logistic Property's P/E

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Swedish Logistic Property maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for Swedish Logistic Property (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) you should know about.
