Arla Plast's (STO:ARPL) Earnings May Just Be The Starting Point
Arla Plast AB's (STO:ARPL) earnings announcement last week was disappointing for investors, despite the decent profit numbers. We have done some analysis and have found some comforting factors beneath the profit numbers.
Zooming In On Arla Plast's Earnings
One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
Arla Plast has an accrual ratio of -0.19 for the year to September 2025. Therefore, its statutory earnings were very significantly less than its free cashflow. In fact, it had free cash flow of kr212m in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of kr96.6m. Arla Plast's free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see.
