EQT Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning

Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. Before making this announcement, EQT's dividend was higher than its profits, but the free cash flows quite comfortably covered it. Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend.

EPS is forecast to rise very quickly over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 248%, which is unsustainable.

EQT's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

Looking back, the dividend has been unstable but with a relatively short history, we think it may be a bit early to draw conclusions about long term dividend sustainability. The annual payment during the last 4 years was €0.206 in 2020, and the most recent fiscal year payment was €0.306. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 10% over that duration. EQT has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Earnings per share has been crawling upwards at 2.4% per year. The earnings growth is anaemic, and the company is paying out 127% of its profit. This gives limited room for the company to raise the dividend in the future.

Our Thoughts On EQT's Dividend

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
