Elanders' (STO:ELAN B) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
The board of Elanders AB (publ) (STO:ELAN B) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of SEK4.15 on the 28th of April, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This takes the annual payment to 2.4% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Elanders' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. Before making this announcement, Elanders was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 42.9% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 23% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2013, the annual payment back then was SEK0.50, compared to the most recent full-year payment of SEK4.15. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 24% a year over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. It's encouraging to see that Elanders has been growing its earnings per share at 23% a year over the past five years. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.
Elanders Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
