When we invest, we're generally looking for stocks that outperform the market average. And in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. For example, long term VBG Group AB (publ) (STO:VBG B) shareholders have enjoyed a 58% share price rise over the last half decade, well in excess of the market return of around 46% (not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 13% in the last year.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over half a decade, VBG Group managed to grow its earnings per share at 20% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 10% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between VBG Group's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Dividends have been really beneficial for VBG Group shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 151%, over the last 5 years, is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

VBG Group shareholders are up 13% for the year. But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 20% a year, over half a decade) look better. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing.
