If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at Chelyabinsk plant of the profiled steel decking (MCX:PRFN) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Chelyabinsk plant of the profiled steel decking:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.021 = ₽238m ÷ (₽14b - ₽2.2b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2021).

So, Chelyabinsk plant of the profiled steel decking has an ROCE of 2.1%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Metals and Mining industry average of 14%.

How Are Returns Trending?

While the ROCE isn't as high as some other companies out there, it's great to see it's on the up. More specifically, while the company has kept capital employed relatively flat over the last five years, the ROCE has climbed 95% in that same time. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. The company is doing well in that sense, and it's worth investigating what the management team has planned for long term growth prospects.

The Bottom Line

In summary, we're delighted to see that Chelyabinsk plant of the profiled steel decking has been able to increase efficiencies and earn higher rates of return on the same amount of capital. However the stock is down a substantial 75% in the last five years so there could be other areas of the business hurting its prospects.
