Not Many Are Piling Into S.C. Helios S.A. (BVB:HEAL) Stock Yet As It Plummets 27%

S.C. Helios S.A. (BVB:HEAL) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 27% share price drop in the last month. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.

Since its price has dipped substantially, S.C. Helios' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 3.5x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in Romania, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 16x and even P/E's above 44x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.

For example, consider that S.C. Helios' financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For S.C. Helios?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, S.C. Helios would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 5.7%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year EPS growth is still a noteworthy 12% in total. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the market is expected to decline by 1.0% over the next year, which puts the company's recent medium-term positive growth rates in a good light for now.

With this information, we find it very odd that S.C. Helios is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can maintain its recent positive growth rate in the face of a shrinking broader market.

What We Can Learn From S.C. Helios' P/E?

Shares in S.C. Helios have plummeted and its P/E is now low enough to touch the ground. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of S.C. Helios revealed its growing earnings over the medium-term aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given the market is set to shrink. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. Perhaps there is some hesitation about the company's ability to stay its recent course and swim against the current of the broader market turmoil. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because this relative performance should normally provide a boost to the share price.
