Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On S4E S.A. (WSE:S4E) Even After 30% Share Price Boost
S4E S.A. (WSE:S4E) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 30% gain in the last month alone. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 5.2% over the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, S4E may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 9.8x, since almost half of all companies in Poland have P/E ratios greater than 13x and even P/E's higher than 29x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
For instance, S4E's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like S4E's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 15% decrease to the company's bottom line. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 72% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Comparing that to the market, which is only predicted to deliver 13% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
In light of this, it's peculiar that S4E's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Final Word
S4E's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that S4E currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
