Further Upside For Moliera2 S.A. (WSE:MO2) Shares Could Introduce Price Risks After 61% Bounce

The Moliera2 S.A. (WSE:MO2) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 61%. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 6.1% isn't as impressive.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Moliera2's P/S ratio of 0.7x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Multiline Retail industry in Poland is also close to 0.8x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has Moliera2 Performed Recently?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Moliera2 over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing revenue performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from falling. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Moliera2's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 11%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 78% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 12% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it interesting that Moliera2 is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Moliera2's P/S?

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Moliera2's P/S is back within range of the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Moliera2 currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/S ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
