Investors Should Be Encouraged By Auto Partner's (WSE:APR) Returns On Capital
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. With that in mind, the ROCE of Auto Partner (WSE:APR) looks great, so lets see what the trend can tell us.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Auto Partner:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.25 = zł276m ÷ (zł1.6b - zł496m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2023).
Thus, Auto Partner has an ROCE of 25%. In absolute terms that's a very respectable return and compared to the Specialty Retail industry average of 23% it's pretty much on par.

The Trend Of ROCE
The trends we've noticed at Auto Partner are quite reassuring. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 25%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 254% more capital is being employed now too. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at Auto Partner thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.
One more thing to note, Auto Partner has decreased current liabilities to 31% of total assets over this period, which effectively reduces the amount of funding from suppliers or short-term creditors. Therefore we can rest assured that the growth in ROCE is a result of the business' fundamental improvements, rather than a cooking class featuring this company's books.
The Bottom Line
A company that is growing its returns on capital and can consistently reinvest in itself is a highly sought after trait, and that's what Auto Partner has. And with the stock having performed exceptionally well over the last five years, these patterns are being accounted for by investors. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
On the other side of ROCE, we have to consider valuation. That's why we have a FREE intrinsic value estimation on our platform that is definitely worth checking out.
