Auto Partner SA (WSE:APR) Stock Rockets 26% As Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected
The Auto Partner SA (WSE:APR) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 26%. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 19% in the last twelve months.
Even after such a large jump in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Auto Partner's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 13.4x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Poland is similar at about 13x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Auto Partner over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/E?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the market for P/E ratios like Auto Partner's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 7.0%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 12% overall rise in EPS. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 13% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's curious that Auto Partner's P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. They may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
The Final Word
Auto Partner's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/E level with the market. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
Our examination of Auto Partner revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
