A Piece Of The Puzzle Missing From Selvita S.A.'s (WSE:SLV) 28% Share Price Climb
Selvita S.A. (WSE:SLV) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 28% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 43% over that time.
Although its price has surged higher, Selvita's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.1x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Life Sciences industry in Poland, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 14.8x and even P/S above 29x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Selvita Has Been Performing
Selvita hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Selvita's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 1.7%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 9.5% overall rise in revenue. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 19% each year during the coming three years according to the five analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 13% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Selvita's P/S sits behind most of its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Key Takeaway
Shares in Selvita have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
A look at Selvita's revenues reveals that, despite glowing future growth forecasts, its P/S is much lower than we'd expect. There could be some major risk factors that are placing downward pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
