We're Not So Sure You Should Rely on CI Games' (WSE:CIG) Statutory Earnings
As a general rule, we think profitable companies are less risky than companies that lose money. However, sometimes companies receive a one-off boost (or reduction) to their profit, and it's not always clear whether statutory profits are a good guide, going forward. This article will consider whether CI Games' (WSE:CIG) statutory profits are a good guide to its underlying earnings.
We like the fact that CI Games made a profit of zł13.2m on its revenue of zł70.7m, in the last year. Even though revenue is down over the last three years, you can see in the chart below that the company has moved from loss-making to profitable.

Importantly, statutory profits are not always the best tool for understanding a company's true earnings power, so it's well worth examining profits in a little more detail. Therefore, today we will consider the nature of CI Games' statutory earnings with reference to its dilution of shareholders and the impact of unusual items. Note: we always recommend investors check balance sheet strength. Click here to be taken to our balance sheet analysis of CI Games.
In order to understand the potential for per share returns, it is essential to consider how much a company is diluting shareholders. As it happens, CI Games issued 13% more new shares over the last year. Therefore, each share now receives a smaller portion of profit. Per share metrics like EPS help us understand how much actual shareholders are benefitting from the company's profits, while the net income level gives us a better view of the company's absolute size. A Look At The Impact Of CI Games' Dilution on Its Earnings Per Share (EPS).
Three years ago, CI Games lost money. Zooming in to the last year, we still can't talk about growth rates coherently, since it made a loss last year. What we do know is that while it's great to see a profit over the last twelve months, that profit would have been better, on a per share basis, if the company hadn't needed to issue shares. So you can see that the dilution has had a bit of an impact on shareholders. Therefore, the dilution is having a noteworthy influence on shareholder returns. And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is influencing shareholder earnings.
If CI Games' EPS can grow over time then that drastically improves the chances of the share price moving in the same direction. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For that reason, you could say that EPS is more important that net income in the long run, assuming the goal is to assess whether a company's share price might grow.
The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Finally, we should also consider the fact that unusual items boosted CI Games' net profit by zł2.7m over the last year. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. If CI Games doesn't see that contribution repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to drop over the current year.
Our Take On CI Games' Profit Performance
To sum it all up, CI Games got a nice boost to profit from unusual items; without that, its statutory results would have looked worse. And furthermore, it went and issued plenty of new shares, ensuring that each shareholder (who did not tip more money in) now owns a smaller proportion of the company. For the reasons mentioned above, we think that a perfunctory glance at CI Games' statutory profits might make it look better than it really is on an underlying level. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing CI Games at this point in time. Our examination of CI Games has focussed on certain factors that can make its earnings look better than they are. And, on that basis, we are somewhat skeptical. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying.
