When you buy shares in a company, there is always a risk that the price drops to zero. But if you pick the right stock, you can make a lot more than 100%. For example, the CDA S.A. (WSE:CDA) share price has soared 156% return in just a single year. The last week saw the share price soften some 4.4%. We'll need to follow CDA for a while to get a better sense of its share price trend, since it hasn't been listed for particularly long.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

CDA was able to grow EPS by 84% in the last twelve months. The share price gain of 156% certainly outpaced the EPS growth. This indicates that the market is now more optimistic about the stock.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of CDA, it has a TSR of 162% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

CDA boasts a total shareholder return of 162% for the last year (that includes the dividends) . We regret to report that the share price is down 4.6% over ninety days. It may simply be that the share price got ahead of itself, although there may have been fundamental developments that are weighing on it. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for CDA that you should be aware of before investing here.
