Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By ONICO S.A.'s (WSE:ONC) Revenues Despite 35% Price Jump
ONICO S.A. (WSE:ONC) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 35% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 65%.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, considering around half the companies operating in Poland's Oil and Gas industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.2x, you may still consider ONICO as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.3x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has ONICO Performed Recently?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at ONICO over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like ONICO's to be considered reasonable.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 68%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 11% overall rise in revenue. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 2.9% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is pretty similar based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
In light of this, it's peculiar that ONICO's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are more bearish than recent times would indicate and have been accepting lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Despite ONICO's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
The fact that ONICO currently trades at a low P/S relative to the industry is unexpected considering its recent three-year growth is in line with the wider industry forecast. When we see industry-like revenue growth but a lower than expected P/S, we assume potential risks are what might be placing downward pressure on the share price. revenue trends suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to perceive a possibility of revenue volatility in the future.
