Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Bumech S.A. (WSE:BMC) share price has dived 30% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 67% share price decline.

Following the heavy fall in price, it would be understandable if you think Bumech is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.2x, considering almost half the companies in Poland's Commercial Services industry have P/S ratios above 1.1x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Bumech's Recent Performance Look Like?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Bumech's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Bumech?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Bumech would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 11% decrease to the company's top line. In spite of this, the company still managed to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. So while the company has done a great job in the past, it's somewhat concerning to see revenue growth decline so harshly.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 15% during the coming year according to the sole analyst following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 6.2%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it odd that Bumech is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Bumech's P/S?

The southerly movements of Bumech's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

To us, it seems Bumech currently trades on a significantly depressed P/S given its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the rest of its industry. The reason for this depressed P/S could potentially be found in the risks the market is pricing in. While the possibility of the share price plunging seems unlikely due to the high growth forecasted for the company, the market does appear to have some hesitation.
