I Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And Automatyka-Pomiary-Sterowanie (WSE:APS) Passed With Ease
It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Automatyka-Pomiary-Sterowanie (WSE:APS), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is Automatyka-Pomiary-Sterowanie Growing?
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Impressively, Automatyka-Pomiary-Sterowanie has grown EPS by 20% per year, compound, in the last three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. On the one hand, Automatyka-Pomiary-Sterowanie's EBIT margins fell over the last year, but on the other hand, revenue grew. So it seems the future my hold further growth, especially if EBIT margins can stabilize.
In the chart below, you can see how the company has grown earnings, and revenue, over time. Click on the chart to see the exact numbers.
Since Automatyka-Pomiary-Sterowanie is no giant, with a market capitalization of zł18m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.
Are Automatyka-Pomiary-Sterowanie Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Automatyka-Pomiary-Sterowanie insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. In fact, they own 57% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. Of course, Automatyka-Pomiary-Sterowanie is a very small company, with a market cap of only zł18m. So despite a large proportional holding, insiders only have zł10.0m worth of stock. That's not a huge stake in absolute terms, but it should help keep insiders aligned with other shareholders.
Is Automatyka-Pomiary-Sterowanie Worth Keeping An Eye On?
Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about Automatyka-Pomiary-Sterowanie's strong EPS growth. I think that EPS growth is something to boast of, and it doesn't surprise me that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. So this is very likely the kind of business that I like to spend time researching, with a view to discerning its true value. Still, you should learn about the 3 warning signs we've spotted with Automatyka-Pomiary-Sterowanie (including 1 which is potentially serious) .
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
