The Q-Free ASA (OB:QFR) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 105%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 90%.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Q-Free may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Electronic industry in Norway have P/S ratios greater than 1.9x and even P/S higher than 13x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Q-Free's Recent Performance Look Like?

Q-Free could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Q-Free's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Q-Free would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 25% gain to the company's top line. Revenue has also lifted 16% in aggregate from three years ago, mostly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 5.2% each year as estimated by the only analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 13% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Q-Free's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What Does Q-Free's P/S Mean For Investors?

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Q-Free's P/S close to the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of Q-Free's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
