Subdued Growth No Barrier To Huddly AS (OB:HDLY) With Shares Advancing 43%
Huddly AS (OB:HDLY) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 43% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 37% in the last twelve months.
Since its price has surged higher, when almost half of the companies in Norway's Communications industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1x, you may consider Huddly as a stock probably not worth researching with its 1.9x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How Has Huddly Performed Recently?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Huddly over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Huddly's to be considered reasonable.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 49%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 51% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 3.2% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this in mind, we find it worrying that Huddly's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
What We Can Learn From Huddly's P/S?
Huddly's P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Huddly revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term isn't resulting in a P/S as low as we expected, given the industry is set to grow. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Should recent medium-term revenue trends persist, it would pose a significant risk to existing shareholders' investments and prospective investors will have a hard time accepting the current value of the stock.
