Spir Group ASA (OB:SPIR) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 28% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 11% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, when around half the companies operating in Norway's Software industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 3x, you may still consider Spir Group as an incredibly enticing stock to check out with its 0.9x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Spir Group Performed Recently?

We'd have to say that with no tangible growth over the last year, Spir Group's revenue has been unimpressive. Perhaps the market believes the recent lacklustre revenue performance is a sign of future underperformance relative to industry peers, hurting the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Spir Group, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Spir Group's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. The latest three year period has seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, in spite of this mediocre revenue growth of late. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company, but investors will want to ask why it has slowed to such an extent.

Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 24% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Spir Group's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

What Does Spir Group's P/S Mean For Investors?

Spir Group's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of Spir Group revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to perceive a likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.
