Vend Marketplaces (OB:VEND) delivers shareholders stellar 45% CAGR over 3 years, surging 7.3% in the last week alone
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. To wit, the Vend Marketplaces ASA (OB:VEND) share price has flown 126% in the last three years. How nice for those who held the stock! And in the last week the share price has popped 7.3%. The company reported its financial results recently; you can catch up on the latest numbers by reading our company report.
The past week has proven to be lucrative for Vend Marketplaces investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's three-year performance.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Vend Marketplaces became profitable within the last three years. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).
It is of course excellent to see how Vend Marketplaces has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this free interactive graphic.
What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Vend Marketplaces, it has a TSR of 205% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Vend Marketplaces provided a TSR of 4.1% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 6% per year for five years. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Vend Marketplaces you should be aware of, and 1 of them is concerning.
