Some stocks are best avoided. We don't wish catastrophic capital loss on anyone. For example, we sympathize with anyone who was caught holding Electromagnetic Geoservices ASA (OB:EMGS) during the five years that saw its share price drop a whopping 99%. The silver lining is that the stock is up 4.6% in about a week.

We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.

Given that Electromagnetic Geoservices didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last five years Electromagnetic Geoservices saw its revenue shrink by 43% per year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. So it's not altogether surprising to see the share price down 59% per year in the same time period. We don't think this is a particularly promising picture. Of course, the poor performance could mean the market has been too severe selling down. That can happen.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between Electromagnetic Geoservices's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Electromagnetic Geoservices hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of -98% exceeds its share price return of -99%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Electromagnetic Geoservices shareholders are down 15% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 1.8%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 53% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm.
