What Sats ASA's (OB:SATS) 29% Share Price Gain Is Not Telling You

Sats ASA (OB:SATS) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 29% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 82%.

Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that Sats' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Hospitality industry in Norway, where the median P/S ratio is around 1x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Sats' P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Sats could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S ratio from falling. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Sats would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 15% gain to the company's revenues. The solid recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 23% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 5.4% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 76%, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's curious that Sats' P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

What Does Sats' P/S Mean For Investors?

Sats' stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

Given that Sats' revenue growth projections are relatively subdued in comparison to the wider industry, it comes as a surprise to see it trading at its current P/S ratio. At present, we aren't confident in the P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. A positive change is needed in order to justify the current price-to-sales ratio.
