Investors Met With Slowing Returns on Capital At Tomra Systems (OB:TOM)
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. With that in mind, the ROCE of Tomra Systems (OB:TOM) looks decent, right now, so lets see what the trend of returns can tell us.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Tomra Systems is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = kr1.5b ÷ (kr11b - kr1.3b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2021).
Therefore, Tomra Systems has an ROCE of 15%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Commercial Services industry average of 9.6% it's much better.

How Are Returns Trending?
The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 15% and the business has deployed 86% more capital into its operations. Since 15% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
On a side note, Tomra Systems has done well to reduce current liabilities to 11% of total assets over the last five years. Effectively suppliers now fund less of the business, which can lower some elements of risk.
What We Can Learn From Tomra Systems' ROCE
To sum it up, Tomra Systems has simply been reinvesting capital steadily, at those decent rates of return. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 637% return they've received over the last five years.
