Insiders At ASML Holding Sold €8.3m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Simply Wall St

Over the past year, many ASML Holding N.V. (AMS:ASML) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

ASML Holding Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP, Roger J. Dassen, for €3.5m worth of shares, at about €804 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of €653. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. ASML Holding insiders own about €59m worth of shares. That equates to 0.02% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
