Has Koninklijke Vopak N.V.'s (AMS:VPK) Impressive Stock Performance Got Anything to Do With Its Fundamentals?
Koninklijke Vopak (AMS:VPK) has had a great run on the share market with its stock up by a significant 13% over the last three months. We wonder if and what role the company's financials play in that price change as a company's long-term fundamentals usually dictate market outcomes. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Koninklijke Vopak's ROE today.
Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company's shareholders.

How Is ROE Calculated?
The formula for ROE is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Koninklijke Vopak is:
15% = €481m ÷ €3.2b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
The 'return' is the profit over the last twelve months. That means that for every €1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated €0.15 in profit.
What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?
So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
Koninklijke Vopak's Earnings Growth And 15% ROE
To start with, Koninklijke Vopak's ROE looks acceptable. Further, the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 15%. However, while Koninklijke Vopak has a pretty respectable ROE, its five year net income decline rate was 13% . We reckon that there could be some other factors at play here that are preventing the company's growth. For example, it could be that the company has a high payout ratio or the business has allocated capital poorly, for instance.
However, when we compared Koninklijke Vopak's growth with the industry we found that while the company's earnings have been shrinking, the industry has seen an earnings growth of 31% in the same period. This is quite worrisome.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. The investor should try to establish if the expected growth or decline in earnings, whichever the case may be, is priced in. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Is VPK fairly valued? This infographic on the company's intrinsic value has everything you need to know.
Is Koninklijke Vopak Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?
In spite of a normal three-year median payout ratio of 42% (that is, a retention ratio of 58%), the fact that Koninklijke Vopak's earnings have shrunk is quite puzzling. It looks like there might be some other reasons to explain the lack in that respect. For example, the business could be in decline.
In addition, Koninklijke Vopak has been paying dividends over a period of at least ten years suggesting that keeping up dividend payments is way more important to the management even if it comes at the cost of business growth. Based on the latest analysts' estimates, we found that the company's future payout ratio over the next three years is expected to hold steady at 43%. As a result, Koninklijke Vopak's ROE is not expected to change by much either, which we inferred from the analyst estimate of 14% for future ROE.
Summary
On the whole, we do feel that Koninklijke Vopak has some positive attributes. Although, we are disappointed to see a lack of growth in earnings even in spite of a high ROE and and a high reinvestment rate. We believe that there might be some outside factors that could be having a negative impact on the business. Having said that, looking at current analyst estimates, we found that the company's earnings growth rate is expected to see a huge improvement.
