Do Arcadis' (AMS:ARCAD) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Arcadis (AMS:ARCAD). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Arcadis' Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Arcadis has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. It's good to see that Arcadis' EPS has grown from €1.47 to €1.78 over twelve months. This amounts to a 21% gain; a figure that shareholders will be pleased to see.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. While we note Arcadis achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 24% to €5.0b. That's a real positive.

Are Arcadis Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a €5.4b company like Arcadis. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. As a matter of fact, their holding is valued at €41m. This considerable investment should help drive long-term value in the business. Even though that's only about 0.8% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but shareholders may be wondering if remuneration policies are in their best interest. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Arcadis, with market caps between €3.7b and €11b, is around €2.3m.

The Arcadis CEO received €1.7m in compensation for the year ending December 2023. That is actually below the median for CEO's of similarly sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.

Should You Add Arcadis To Your Watchlist?

As previously touched on, Arcadis is a growing business, which is encouraging. Earnings growth might be the main attraction for Arcadis, but the fun does not stop there. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, you'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 1 warning sign for Arcadis that you should be aware of.

There's always the possibility of doing well buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But for those who consider these important metrics, we encourage you to check out companies that do have those features.
