For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Perak Transit Berhad (KLSE:PTRANS). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Quickly Is Perak Transit Berhad Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Perak Transit Berhad managed to grow EPS by 5.2% per year, over three years. While that sort of growth rate isn't amazing, it does show the business is growing.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Unfortunately, Perak Transit Berhad's revenue dropped 2.8% last year, but the silver lining is that EBIT margins improved from 41% to 46%. That falls short of ideal.

Are Perak Transit Berhad Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Perak Transit Berhad shares worth a considerable sum. Indeed, they hold RM152m worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. That amounts to 30% of the company, demonstrating a degree of high-level alignment with shareholders.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Perak Transit Berhad with market caps under RM812m is about RM585k.

The Perak Transit Berhad CEO received total compensation of only RM99k in the year to . This could be considered a token amount, and indicates that the company does not need to use payment to motivate the CEO - that is often a good sign. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

Does Perak Transit Berhad Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

One important encouraging feature of Perak Transit Berhad is that it is growing profits. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for Perak Transit Berhad, but the pretty picture gets better than that.
