NEXG Berhad (KLSE:NEXG) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 26%
NEXG Berhad (KLSE:NEXG) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 26% share price drop in the last month. Longer-term shareholders will rue the drop in the share price, since it's now virtually flat for the year after a promising few quarters.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, NEXG Berhad's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 8.6x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Malaysia, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 15x and even P/E's above 27x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, NEXG Berhad has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is NEXG Berhad's Growth Trending?
NEXG Berhad's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 48% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 351% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 9.8% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the broader market is forecast to expand by 11% per year, which paints a poor picture.
In light of this, it's understandable that NEXG Berhad's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.
What We Can Learn From NEXG Berhad's P/E?
NEXG Berhad's recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that NEXG Berhad maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
