For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Hong Leong Capital Berhad (KLSE:HLCAP). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

Hong Leong Capital Berhad's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. It certainly is nice to see that Hong Leong Capital Berhad has managed to grow EPS by 30% per year over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. I note that Hong Leong Capital Berhad's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. While Hong Leong Capital Berhad may have maintained EBIT margins over the last year, revenue has fallen. And that does make me a little more cautious of the stock.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.

Are Hong Leong Capital Berhad Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Hong Leong Capital Berhad shares worth a considerable sum. Indeed, they hold RM123m worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. That amounts to 8.3% of the company, demonstrating a degree of high-level alignment with shareholders.

Does Hong Leong Capital Berhad Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about Hong Leong Capital Berhad's strong EPS growth. Further, the high level of insider ownership impresses me, and suggests that I'm not the only one who appreciates the EPS growth. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research. So the answer is that I do think this is a good stock to follow along with. It is worth noting though that we have found 1 warning sign for Hong Leong Capital Berhad that you need to take into consideration.
