If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Protasco Berhad (KLSE:PRTASCO) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Protasco Berhad:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = RM51m ÷ (RM827m - RM370m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2022).
Thus, Protasco Berhad has an ROCE of 11%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 5.2% generated by the Construction industry.

How Are Returns Trending?
There hasn't been much to report for Protasco Berhad's returns and its level of capital employed because both metrics have been steady for the past five years. This tells us the company isn't reinvesting in itself, so it's plausible that it's past the growth phase. So unless we see a substantial change at Protasco Berhad in terms of ROCE and additional investments being made, we wouldn't hold our breath on it being a multi-bagger.
On a side note, Protasco Berhad has done well to reduce current liabilities to 45% of total assets over the last five years. This can eliminate some of the risks inherent in the operations because the business has less outstanding obligations to their suppliers and or short-term creditors than they did previously. We'd like to see this trend continue though because as it stands today, thats still a pretty high level.
In Conclusion...
In a nutshell, Protasco Berhad has been trudging along with the same returns from the same amount of capital over the last five years. Moreover, since the stock has crumbled 77% over the last five years, it appears investors are expecting the worst. On the whole, we aren't too inspired by the underlying trends and we think there may be better chances of finding a multi-bagger elsewhere.
Like most companies, Protasco Berhad does come with some risks, and we've found 1 warning sign that you should be aware of.
