While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd. (KLSE:MUHIBAH) share price up 19% in a single quarter. But don't envy holders -- looking back over 5 years the returns have been really bad. In fact, the share price has declined rather badly, down some 65% in that time. Some might say the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. Of course, this could be the start of a turnaround.

After losing 12% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

We don't think that Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd's modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.

In the last five years Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd saw its revenue shrink by 10.0% per year. That's definitely a weaker result than most pre-profit companies report. It seems appropriate, then, that the share price slid about 11% annually during that time. It's fair to say most investors don't like to invest in loss making companies with falling revenue. You'd want to research this company pretty thoroughly before buying, it looks a bit too risky for us.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd's TSR of was a loss of 62% for the 5 years. That wasn't as bad as its share price return, because it has paid dividends.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 50% over the last year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 10% per year over five years. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business.
