Shareholders in Ekovest Berhad (KLSE:EKOVEST) have lost 25%, as stock drops 12% this past week

In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But the main game is to find enough winners to more than offset the losers So we wouldn't blame long term Ekovest Berhad (KLSE:EKOVEST) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 26% over a half decade. Furthermore, it's down 14% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

Ekovest Berhad isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

Over half a decade Ekovest Berhad reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 2.8% for each year. While far from catastrophic that is not good. The share price decline at a rate of 5% per year is disappointing. But it doesn't surprise given the falling revenue. Without profits, its hard to see how shareholders win if the revenue keeps falling.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Ekovest Berhad shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 4.4% over the last year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 5% per year over five years. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
