Corporativo Fragua. de (BMV:FRAGUAB) sheds 3.3% this week, as yearly returns fall more in line with earnings growth
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. One great example is Corporativo Fragua, S.A.B. de C.V. (BMV:FRAGUAB) which saw its share price drive 290% higher over five years. Then again, the 8.1% share price decline hasn't been so fun for shareholders.
While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During five years of share price growth, Corporativo Fragua. de achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 27% per year. This EPS growth is reasonably close to the 31% average annual increase in the share price. This indicates that investor sentiment towards the company has not changed a great deal. Indeed, it would appear the share price is reacting to the EPS.

We know that Corporativo Fragua. de has improved its bottom line over the last three years, but what does the future have in store? You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this free interactive graphic.
What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Corporativo Fragua. de, it has a TSR of 340% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Corporativo Fragua. de shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 87% over one year. And that does include the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 34% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. Is Corporativo Fragua. de cheap compared to other companies?
