Don't Buy SES S.A. (BDL:SESGL) For Its Next Dividend Without Doing These Checks

It looks like SES S.A. (BDL:SESGL) is about to go ex-dividend in the next 3 days. The ex-dividend date generally occurs two days before the record date, which is the day on which shareholders need to be on the company's books in order to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is important because any transaction on a stock needs to have been settled before the record date in order to be eligible for a dividend. Accordingly, SES investors that purchase the stock on or after the 14th of October will not receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 16th of October.

The company's next dividend payment will be €0.2125 per share, and in the last 12 months, the company paid a total of €0.50 per share. Last year's total dividend payments show that SES has a trailing yield of 7.6% on the current share price of €6.57. If you buy this business for its dividend, you should have an idea of whether SES's dividend is reliable and sustainable. We need to see whether the dividend is covered by earnings and if it's growing.

If a company pays out more in dividends than it earned, then the dividend might become unsustainable - hardly an ideal situation. SES reported a loss after tax last year, which means it's paying a dividend despite being unprofitable. While this might be a one-off event, this is unlikely to be sustainable in the long term. Given that the company reported a loss last year, we now need to see if it generated enough free cash flow to fund the dividend. If cash earnings don't cover the dividend, the company would have to pay dividends out of cash in the bank, or by borrowing money, neither of which is long-term sustainable. Fortunately, it paid out only 35% of its free cash flow in the past year.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

When earnings decline, dividend companies become much harder to analyse and own safely. If earnings fall far enough, the company could be forced to cut its dividend. SES reported a loss last year, and the general trend suggests its earnings have also been declining in recent years, making us wonder if the dividend is at risk.

Many investors will assess a company's dividend performance by evaluating how much the dividend payments have changed over time. SES's dividend payments per share have declined at 8.2% per year on average over the past 10 years, which is uninspiring. It's never nice to see earnings and dividends falling, but at least management has cut the dividend rather than potentially risk the company's health in an attempt to maintain it.

To Sum It Up

Is SES worth buying for its dividend? We're a bit uncomfortable with it paying a dividend while being loss-making. However, we note that the dividend was covered by cash flow. Overall it doesn't look like the most suitable dividend stock for a long-term buy and hold investor.

Although, if you're still interested in SES and want to know more, you'll find it very useful to know what risks this stock faces. For example - SES has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
