Reflecting on SGC EnergyLtd's (KRX:005090) Share Price Returns Over The Last Five Years
While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the SGC Energy Co.,Ltd. (KRX:005090) share price has gained 16% in the last three months. But if you look at the last five years the returns have not been good. In fact, the share price is down 54%, which falls well short of the return you could get by buying an index fund.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Looking back five years, both SGC EnergyLtd's share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 29% per year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 14% compound annual share price fall. The relatively muted share price reaction might be because the market expects the business to turn around.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of SGC EnergyLtd, it has a TSR of -48% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
SGC EnergyLtd shareholders gained a total return of 46% during the year. But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 8% endured over half a decade. So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
