Does Biolog Device (KOSDAQ:208710) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?
Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. We note that Biolog Device Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:208710) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

What Is Biolog Device's Debt?
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of September 2024 Biolog Device had ₩12.6b of debt, an increase on ₩9.72b, over one year. However, it also had ₩7.31b in cash, and so its net debt is ₩5.30b.
How Healthy Is Biolog Device's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Biolog Device had liabilities of ₩36.8b due within a year, and liabilities of ₩356.3m falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of ₩7.31b and ₩27.9b worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities total ₩1.89b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
Given Biolog Device has a market capitalization of ₩39.2b, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. However, we do think it is worth keeping an eye on its balance sheet strength, as it may change over time. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But it is Biolog Device's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So when considering debt, it's definitely worth looking at the earnings trend. Over 12 months, Biolog Device reported revenue of ₩148b, which is a gain of 45%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. With any luck the company will be able to grow its way to profitability.
Caveat Emptor
Even though Biolog Device managed to grow its top line quite deftly, the cold hard truth is that it is losing money on the EBIT line. Indeed, it lost a very considerable ₩6.3b at the EBIT level. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. However, it doesn't help that it burned through ₩4.8b of cash over the last year. So in short it's a really risky stock. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. These risks can be hard to spot. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Biolog Device (of which 2 are significant!) you should know about.
