Returns On Capital At JNTC (KOSDAQ:204270) Paint A Concerning Picture
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. Although, when we looked at JNTC (KOSDAQ:204270), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for JNTC:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.081 = ₩33b ÷ (₩676b - ₩267b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
Thus, JNTC has an ROCE of 8.1%. In absolute terms, that's a low return but it's around the Electronic industry average of 6.9%.

How Are Returns Trending?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at JNTC, we didn't gain much confidence. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 13%, but since then they've fallen to 8.1%. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
Our Take On JNTC's ROCE
While returns have fallen for JNTC in recent times, we're encouraged to see that sales are growing and that the business is reinvesting in its operations. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 116% return over the last three years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we would look further into this stock to make sure the other metrics justify the positive view.
