What Type Of Returns Would MOBASELtd's(KOSDAQ:101330) Shareholders Have Earned If They Purchased Their SharesThree Years Ago?
While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the MOBASE Co.,Ltd. (KOSDAQ:101330) share price has gained 26% in the last three months. But that doesn't help the fact that the three year return is less impressive. Truth be told the share price declined 30% in three years and that return, Dear Reader, falls short of what you could have got from passive investing with an index fund.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
MOBASELtd saw its share price decline over the three years in which its EPS also dropped, falling to a loss. Since the company has fallen to a loss making position, it's hard to compare the change in EPS with the share price change. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between MOBASELtd's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. MOBASELtd's TSR of was a loss of 28% for the 3 years. That wasn't as bad as its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
MOBASELtd shareholders are down 14% for the year, but the market itself is up 31%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 4% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for MOBASELtd (2 shouldn't be ignored) that you should be aware of.
