The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From MAKUS Inc.'s (KOSDAQ:093520) Earnings Yet

MAKUS Inc.'s (KOSDAQ:093520) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 5.6x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 11x and even P/E's above 22x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

For example, consider that MAKUS' financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For MAKUS?

MAKUS' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 43% decrease to the company's bottom line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 13% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 27% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term earnings results is a sobering picture.

With this information, we are not surprised that MAKUS is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From MAKUS' P/E?

While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that MAKUS maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
